Jun. 17th, 2007 07:41 pmWell, I totally spoiled myself this morning, and happily watched the episode "Utopia" in pieces on YouTube. I'd feel bad about it, but actually I don't. Can't tell my husband anything, though...he insists on waiting until fall.
So. Thoughts?
Derek Jacobi was incredible.
The music was stunning and pulled me in.
Martha is damned annoying - one more eyeroll at the mention of Rose and I was gonna hope something killed her by the end of the episode.
The reunion between the Doctor and Jack? Well, I almost expected a punch in there somewhere, but it worked, oddly. Jack needing to know what happened to Rose was perfect, and that conversation between the two while Jack was in the irradiated chamber? That was truly interesting. That list Jack gives...it made me shudder. To live through all that, over and over? It was also intriguing that the Doctor said he "ran away" from him. He really seemed unnerved by the man - I think it went beyond the prejudice Jack suggested. Reminds us that he's totally alien. I've seen some reviews of the ep in which people grumble that the Doctor seems weird and bad tempered, etc. But he is alien. If he reacted always as a human, that wouldn't work. Makes me wonder if he was able to hold Jack at arms' length before because of the difference and now, they have this in common, and that panics him?
The sheer number of times the Doctor got exasperated with Jack's flirting? "Oh, don't start..." Heh. Does make one ask why it bothers him so much...hmmm... ;)
And a shallow thought, how good John Barrowman looks while running (which he certainly did enough of in this one!)...
Jack's saying "Fantastic" with exactly the right inflection to make you know that he's intending to remind the Doctor of his last incarnation...
The Master. In that body. Wheeee....continuity between the two shows!
Nasty, nasty cliffhanger, though.
