Sep. 11th, 2007 08:12 pmYou can't avoid the date today when you're in a classroom of kids. Best quote from the only real disccusion we had (in history class), when I pointed out all the positive moments of people just helping total strangers that day - "You know, Mrs. R, it shows how people are basically pretty good." Maybe I'll put that Anne Frank quote on my whiteboard tomorrow...
So I wasn't going to watch anything today, but there was this thing on the history channel mostly on photographers at the site that day, their stories in person and their photos. And this one woman had snapped shots of the people who jumped from the Towers. When I saw one of those shots in 2002, I remember just crying, which I saw them again tonight. But what hit me the most was her description. She is a dance teacher also, and said that she "was used to watching bodies move", and then she commented in this really quiet voice that she could tell as these people fell if they'd jumped in despair or in defiance. "Totally different body language", she said. And when asked why they stayed to see that, she and two other journalists essentially said because they knew that it was important to stay so that the people knew they weren't alone. There needed to be witnesses.
