An odd moment tonight after my fellow musicians and I toasted political change and voices being heard...someone (a woman) complained that Nancy Pelosi "acted too much like a man" and it bugged her. A few of us took exception to that. I'm sorry, but I wasn't aware that a woman who was forceful and insistent and stubborn was acting male. Good grief; talk about stereotyping. Should she perhaps wear flowery dresses and long hair? Be sweet and meek? She represents me quite well, thank you.
And there's all the language stuff this week. I had to explain to my daughter that the "midget dance" her friend was doing and that she was copying was disrespectful and rude, and so was that phrase. I had to explain to a student that making "war whoops" and pretending to be American Indian while doing so was not acceptable either and why stereotypes are hurtful. I had to ditch a curriculum activity in a teacher's guide for history as it was calling the stories in the chapter "Indian myths" as though they were invalid and just silly stories instead of someone's religious beliefs. Sometimes it feels like I have to fight too much. I do it, but I hate that I have to, if that makes any sense.
Long day. I'm going to fall over in total exhaustion as soon as my decongestant stops playing havoc with my nervous system.
