songspinner: (tired)
After reading (and sniffling over) [livejournal.com profile] dreamflower02's memories of surviving Katrina, I noticed her comment that another fellow fanfic writer had sent her a bunch of the challenge #20 tales to read. So I wandered over to that webpage and took a peek at what I'd written (don't know if it was one of the ones she sent you, [livejournal.com profile] dreamflower2). I always tell kids in my classes that you write what you know and how you feel, and I must have combined what she'd told us with how I was feeling...I made myself cry, just about, re-reading what I'd written then.

It was interesting to remember that month or two - remembering the long wait to hear from folks and checking the Red Cross website lists every day on my lunch break, the joy when we did hear (especially that one friend and his girlfriend had managed to get out safely after traveling for a week and were now engaged). The pleasure I felt at watching the kids at my school do whatever they could to help, and knowing that they cared, and my little girl donating her spare change "'cause there are some kids who don't have any toys at all anymore".

Intense stuff.
