May. 22nd, 2008 05:01 pmFour day weekend! Why? Because of the forest fire in the Santa Cruz Mts. Because our school district is closed down as of 3:15 today, when the powers that be finally decided that breathing in smoke and ducking actual falls of ash was unhealthy for teenagers and their helping adults and finally made the call.
And I mean literal ashfall that looked as if it were snowing (or suspiciously like the movie I watched last night on PBS about Krakatoa) and swirling clouds of fine particulate dust/ash that obscured vision and breathing. I dashed out at lunch and bought a package of dust masks at the drugstore, wore one all afternoonl and gave away a few to other folks with asthma. I stopped by my husband's school on the way home and he had to brush ash out of my hair.
Several thousand acres and growing, this fire. Joy. Some of my kids left school with parents 'cause their areas were being evacuated, as well as a couple of teachers.
So I'll stay in the nice HEPA-filtered house tomorrow and do housework and grade papers.
