Horrible day with one really, really cool thing.
The horrible part? Migraine while teaching and getting through my day, and wearing my old glasses (current ones broke) which didn't help. OW. And I don't have a painkiller that I don't react to right now. And the pain was bad enough that I totally forgot a meeting at my kid's school, so I had to email an apology with a request to reschedule, and feel stupid.
Better part? I and a few students and teachers rescued...count 'em...FOUR baby house finches during the school day. Normally, they're pushed out of the nest and live on the ground until they're truly able to fly. And normally, you let the parent birds take care of them and you don't pick them up. However, no low bushes or shelter for them in that part of the school, and they were all smack out where people would trample them accidentally while running to their next class.
9:40 - First bird at my door. "Hey, you do this sort of thing, right? Could you take it until Ms. L can get to the Wildlife Rescue place on her prep period?" Why sure. :) I'll just teach this lesson with all the kids trying to see inside the box for a half-hour.
10:15 - "Um, we found this one a minute ago, and it almost got crushed on the sidewalk. Can you add it to the box?" Uh-huh. Five minute of feeding water drops from an eyedropper to stubborn balls of fluff.
11:05 - (hears kids scream outside) "Maestra! This little bird tried to fly and hit that girl in the head really hard and then it fell on the ground!" Sigh. Okay. Right. Only this one won't get off my hand. I spent an hour solid with this little fuzzball perched on my arm or shoulder, while I ate lunch , supervised kids outside, and did photocopying. Not kidding! It just snuggled up into my hair and peeped in my ear! Don't worry - pictures forthcoming, I hope. Totally well-behaved. If you know the scene from "Mary Poppins" where Julie Andrews has the bluebird on her finger, that's what it looked like. :)
12:15 - (as I go to try to get the little twit into a box again) "Uh, hi." (this is another teacher) "I have one more for you guys." Sheesh!
1:30 Mrs. L collects box of birds, and reports later that the wildlife center thanked us and that we did the right thing.
Whew.
