(no subject)

Getting a little better. No fever for 48 hours, less achy. Still almost no speaking voice, which makes teaching not fun and makes me get really creative... I'll just be really, really quiet from now until tomorrow morning when I arrive at work, and drink lots and lots of warm liquids.

The really frustrating thing is that I obviously will not be singing at the funeral for my best friend's mom tomorrow night, and possibly not even able to go. Best friend totally understands, but I wanted to be there for her. We'll have to see.

Weirdness for today? Other teacher warning me that he had to use a "teachable moment" in his class as apparently there are huge numbers of kids in that group who didn't know what Jewish meant and those who "did" had been taught those lovely things about some of us having horns and hoofs and stuff. Joy. He handled it really well, I thought - pointing out real information without judging and explained a bunch of the history of such prejudice. Think I'll volunteer to go in and teach a lesson or Q&A for his class if he wants me to - I haven't done that in a while, and it has more impact coming from a person actually in the culture the lesson's about (which is why I ask someone from the Islamic speakers' group in every year).

And then people wonder why I'm so intensely a Democrat...some of the deliberate prejudice on the airwaves and in the news lately is very scary and unfortunately, not unexpected. *wishes very very hard in the direction of our future election - I want a safe country for my child and my students*
