Got to school this morning and as I pulled into the parking lot across from the ocean, saw a whalespout go up and hang in the air like a miniature cloud. Rounded up my class as they arrived, grabbed the class set of binoculars to share, and we ran across. They beat me, 'cause wound-up 10-11 year olds always beat a 36 year old who hasn't slept well. :)
We saw the spouts again and realized there was at least one mother and calf pair. Then the whales came within 100 yards of where we were standing! The baby whale was exploring the kelp beds (poor freaked-out sea otters...) and kept popping its head up, and the mom was just cruising along. Another whale was a bit further out. Needless to say, especially after they moved off and the baby did a full breach jump out of the water(!), we decided that it was a great start to the morning.
Then my kid wasn't feeling good and I had to call a substitute teacher (hence posting from home), but...
WHALES! (bounces up and down squeeing with glee) The migration has definitely arrived.
