8:20 this morning? Started my kids on their morning journal writing while listening the "I Have A Dream" speech. Explained why today would be so incredible for a lot of people in the context of civil rights history. Some of them had never heard the actual speech, but had read it in a textbook, so they were kind of interested despite themselves.
Tonight? My almost-9 year old comes to me and says "Mama, are you going to watch the speech? Can I watch it with you? I remember reading about Martin Luther King Jr. at school and Grandma told me today was the anniversary, so it's really neat that Obama's talking today, too." *MAMA MELTS* Surrounded by multiple generations of activists, this kid. :) So she stayed up to watch it - I think she understood about a quarter of it, asking me to explain bits of it, giggled at some of the delegates in silly hats, giggled at Senator Obama's kids being on camera because they were cracking up, and got really huge eyes when she saw how many people were there. I didn't cry until the last bit of the speech.
I suddenly thought, as he got to a nice bit of rhythmic repetition of phrase, "Good grief - he's got Sam Seaborn writing his speeches!" I guess West Wing is still in the back of my head somewhere...
Si se puede, indeed.
