Feb. 22nd, 2008 08:58 pmOkay. For some reason (and not this is not a fetish, just a thing, really), I noticed hands this episode. Hands which were constantly focused on by the camera operators and the director.
- Jack's hand gripping Owen's with his own (the one not with the Glove on it)
- Martha and Jack's hands grounding Owen when he collapses in his first "trip" into the dark place, and his clinging to Jack frantically for comfort
-Jack's hand on Owen's shoulder and then running absently through the younger man's hair during that beautiful discussion in the jail scene. And then the older-brother shove he gave him with that same hand afterward.
- Gwen just grabbing Owen and hugging him goodbye, which worked quite well, I thought, in place of the babbling she would have done earlier when Owen stopped her. She just knew he needed that right then, and it seemed oddly to give him strength to make his choice.
- When Owen was going up the stairs to, well, get his brain destroyed, his hand on the rail slides very deliberately and slowly up the rail to meet Ianto's. We don't see their hands touch, but it is implied in the camera shot when it goes up to Ianto's face. I like that we don't see it, but are led to assume it. It's an interesting gesture and says way more than if those two actually had a conversation.
- Jack's hands doing a "what the...." little movement at the sight of Ianto with a hockey stick... :)
-Gwen's hands on Jack's arm as he holds her back from trying to get to Owen
-Jack's hand down on Owen's shoulder again, after Owen fights the whatever-it-was
Not a bad episode, although I've learned not to watch this sort of thing before bed. Bad idea....
I thought Owen talking to the kid was really interesting and full of dramatic irony (tons of that in this) and that the music during the final fight was odd, and wasn't sure why they chose it. However, I loved the choice of the music as Owen walked to be killed - it was the same leitmotif that ran under Jack's waking up and coming back from death. Hmmm.... guess the parallels between the two men are really, really deliberate this season.
One last thought - I was fascinated by the fact that the writers used Owen to question Jack about whether he was going to do anything about the fact that his bringing Owen back caused deaths. That is strong writing, and I hope they don't just drop that plotline.
